Township Seeking Permanent Fix for Route 601 Pothole

MONTGOMERY, NJ  – Business Administrator, Lori Savron, addressed a recurring roadway problem on County Route 601 near the CSX rail crossing by Gibraltar, where a deep pothole has periodically developed.

Because Route 601 is a county road, Somerset County has provided emergency patching, but Savron said township officials are seeking a permanent solution. The township has requested a meeting with the county to determine how the issue can be resolved and what responsibilities may fall to the county, CSX or Gibraltar.

Savron said the repeated deterioration appears to be associated with heavy truck traffic in the area and noted that improperly timed temporary repairs can create a safety concern. She thanked Somerset County officials for responding promptly after the township raised the issue.

truck weight enforcement checkpoint is also expected to take place. Savron explained that municipal authorities do not have jurisdiction to conduct truck-weight enforcement, so Montgomery Police coordinate with the New Jersey State Police for that enforcement effort.
