Township to Receive Supportive Housing Award

Business Administrator Lori Savron announced that Montgomery has been selected to receive an award from the Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey for one of its affordable housing projects.

The project is a six-bedroom group home designed for adults with disabilities who have significant medical needs. The development is part of Montgomery’s Third Round affordable housing plan and involves Allies Inc., a nonprofit organization serving individuals with disabilities.

Savron said work on the project dates back to 2010 and involved a lengthy process that included subdivision of the property, approvals for construction of a new home and the challenge of assembling financing. Montgomery advocated for six bedrooms rather than the four more commonly found in such projects, with each bedroom providing an affordable housing credit to the township.

Monarch Housing Associates was later brought into the project to help navigate financing and other agency requirements. Savron said the award recognizes a municipality that has demonstrated leadership and commitment to developing affordable and supportive housing. Montgomery is expected to receive the award in November.
