Montgomery Softball Rolls, Boys Lacrosse Edges South Brunswick as Baseball Falls in Tight Game

Montgomery High School teams came away with a mixed set of results, highlighted by a dominant softball victory over Rahway and a one-goal boys lacrosse win over South Brunswick, while the baseball team dropped a low-scoring matchup against Manville.
Softball: Cougars Power Past Rahway, 14-3
Montgomery softball continued its strong season with a 14-3 win over Rahway, using steady offense throughout the game to improve to 12-8.
The Cougars scored in every inning they came to bat, opening with three runs in the first and adding one in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Montgomery finished with 14 hits and also took advantage of seven Rahway errors.
Grace Gandolfo drove in a team-high four runs for Montgomery, going 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Alex Winer added a strong offensive performance, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.
Nicolette Shackelford went 2-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, while Maggie McGlynn went 2-for-4 and scored once. Stella Cunha also had two hits, including a double, and scored a run.
Matilda Suh contributed at the plate and in the circle. She went 1-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, then earned the win by pitching six innings. Suh allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits while walking one and striking out five.
Ryane Riddell added a hit, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, while Isabella Malek had a hit, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Allison McKnight added a triple and scored once.
Rahway, which fell to 12-7, was led by Amanda Lebers, Danielle Maher and Hannah Gallagher, who each had two hits. Maher and Gallagher each drove in a run.
Boys Lacrosse: Mutton’s Five Goals Lead Cougars Past South Brunswick
Montgomery boys lacrosse held off South Brunswick for a 7-6 victory, improving to 8-8 on the season.
The Cougars led 2-1 after the first quarter before South Brunswick responded with three goals in the second to take a 4-2 halftime lead. Montgomery answered with a decisive third quarter, scoring five times to move back in front. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Zach Mutton powered the Montgomery offense with five goals, accounting for most of the Cougars’ scoring. Colin Long added one goal and two assists for a three-point game, while Miles Dawson also scored.
In goal, Alexander Mancilla made 10 saves while allowing six goals, helping Montgomery protect the lead through a scoreless fourth quarter.
Montgomery generated 24 shots on goal and collected 48 ground balls, according to the box score. Roman Mondillo handled faceoff duties, winning 9 of 17 draws.
South Brunswick, now 8-7, was led by Ian Taylor, who had two goals and one assist, and Cameron Gray, who scored twice. T.J. Mascicki added one goal and one assist, while Ronan Kasziba-O’Rahilly also scored. South Brunswick goalie Jacob Geroldmade 18 saves.
Baseball: Cougars Fall Short Against Manville, 2-1
Montgomery baseball dropped a close 2-1 decision to Manville despite playing error-free defense.
Manville scored both of its runs in the second inning and held off Montgomery the rest of the way. The Cougars scored their lone run in the fourth but could not complete the comeback.

Manville finished with nine hits, while Montgomery had five. The Mustangs committed four errors, but the Cougars were unable to turn those miscues into enough offense.
Manville was led by Aidan Johnson and Evan Canica, who each went 3-for-3. Tyler Johnson and Ben Canuso each drove in a run for the Mustangs, who improved to 8-10.
Montgomery fell to 9-15 with the loss.
