Montgomery Township — Montgomery High School athletics delivered a mix of results across a busy day of competition, highlighted by a strong showing from the boys tennis team and a resilient late push from the baseball squad, while boys lacrosse battled but came up short on the road.
Boys Lacrosse Stumbles After Strong Start
Montgomery’s boys lacrosse team opened with energy but could not sustain momentum in an 11–7 loss to Monroe.
The Cougars (2-4) jumped out to an early advantage, matching Monroe goal-for-goal in the first quarter before building a 6-3 lead at halftime behind a balanced offensive effort. However, the third quarter proved decisive, as Monroe erupted for six unanswered goals to seize control of the game.
Zach Mutton led Montgomery with four goals, continuing his strong offensive play. Patrick Petrozzini added two goals and an assist, while Colin Long contributed a goal and an assist along with a team-high nine ground balls. Will Schwartz facilitated the offense with three assists.
Despite a solid defensive effort that included 10 saves from goalkeeper Xander Mancilla, Monroe’s possession advantage — particularly at the faceoff X — proved critical. Joseph Santangelo dominated draws, winning 19 of 21 attempts, helping Monroe control tempo during its decisive third-quarter surge.
Boys Tennis Earns Convincing Victory
Montgomery’s boys tennis team turned in one of its most complete performances of the season, defeating Bridgewater-Raritan 4-1 to improve to 3-2.
The Cougars secured victories at second and third singles, with Ethan Qian and Arjun Poddar both posting dominant straight-set wins. Montgomery also swept the doubles matches, as the teams of Srikar Bavigadda and Advaith Molakaseema at first doubles, and Sanjay Balaji and Nathan Han at second doubles, each delivered strong performances.
The only setback came at first singles, where Wilson Dee dropped a tightly contested three-set match.
Baseball Battles Back to Earn Tie
Montgomery baseball showed resilience, rallying late to secure a 3-3 tie against Hamilton West.
Trailing 3-0 after four innings, the Cougars chipped away with two runs in the fifth before adding single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to even the score.
Mason Neufeld and Henry Maddox each recorded key hits, while Ian Quinn led the offense with a two-hit performance. Montgomery capitalized on opportunities late despite limited offensive production overall.
On the mound, Sebastian Kyler delivered a strong outing in relief, allowing three runs — none earned — over 5.2 innings while striking out three. The pitching staff worked through defensive challenges, as errors contributed to Hamilton West’s early scoring.
