Montgomery Field Hockey Outlasts Voorhees in 5–4 Thriller

Montgomery — In a high-scoring clash between two of the area’s top field hockey programs, the Montgomery Cougars held off a furious second-half push from the Voorhees Vikings to earn a thrilling 5–4 victory on Thursday afternoon. The win lifted Montgomery to 5–4 on the season while handing Voorhees (8–2) just its second loss of the year.

The Cougars struck first midway through the opening quarter when Ella Garrison buried the game’s first goal. Voorhees answered quickly, though, with Kayla Ciculya converting off an assist from Nadia DiRe to knot the score at 1–1 after one.

Montgomery took control in the second quarter, capitalizing on crisp ball movement and finishing. Garrison netted her second of the day before Elli Pizzuli added another, sending the Cougars into halftime with a 3–1 advantage.

The third quarter brought fireworks on both ends. Garrison set up Maddie Gomez to extend Montgomery’s lead, but Voorhees responded through DiRe, assisted by Brooklynn Trego, to cut the margin back to two. Garrison and Pizzuli connected again moments later, giving Montgomery a 5–2 cushion heading into the final quarter.

Voorhees refused to go quietly. Ciculya tallied her second goal of the afternoon in the fourth, this time assisted by Christa Lenzinger, pulling the Vikings within one. But Montgomery’s defense, anchored by Phoebe Rounds in goal with six saves, stood tall down the stretch to preserve the narrow victory.

Statistically, Voorhees outshot Montgomery 16–12 and held a decisive 12–3 edge in penalty corners, but the Cougars’ efficiency in the circle made the difference. Garrison finished with two goals and two assists for a team-high six points, while Pizzuli also struck twice.

The win marked Montgomery’s biggest victory of the season to date, toppling a Vikings team that had been nearly flawless through its first nine contests.

After Warren Hills controlled much of the opening set, Montgomery responded with resilience in the second. Maya Flores anchored the defense with a match-high 31 digs, while outside hitter Polar Zacherau sparked the offense, leading Montgomery with six kills and adding three aces.

The Blue Streaks regrouped in the decisive third set, capitalizing on Montgomery miscues and stringing together runs to pull away for the victory.
