Montgomery Police Launch Special Needs Identification Decal Program to Enhance Safety and Communication

Montgomery Township The Montgomery Township Police Department has announced a new community-focused initiative aimed at improving interactions between first responders and residents with special needs.

In partnership with Rock Brook School and the Montgomery Special Education PTA (MSEPTA), the department has introduced a Special Needs Identification Decal Program, a voluntary effort designed to increase awareness and promote safer, more informed responses during both emergency and routine situations.

The program provides identification decals for homes and vehicles, allowing police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel to quickly recognize when an individual with autism or other cognitive or developmental conditions may be present. Officials say the decals are intended to support more effective communication and reduce potential misunderstandings during critical moments.

“Our goal is to build trust and ensure that every member of our community feels safe and understood,” said Police Chief Silvio Bet. “This program allows our officers and first responders to approach situations with greater awareness and sensitivity, ultimately leading to better outcomes for everyone involved.”

School officials also emphasized the importance of the initiative. Thomas Connolly, principal of Rock Brook School, described the decals as “a simple yet powerful way to enhance safety, awareness, and support for individuals with autism and special needs,” noting the collaborative effort behind the program.

The decals are available free of charge and can be picked up at the Montgomery Township Police Department. Participation in the program is entirely voluntary.

The new initiative builds on the department’s Blue Envelope Program, launched in 2025 in collaboration with the same community partners. That program was designed to assist drivers with special needs during traffic stops by providing a clear and consistent way to share important information with law enforcement.

Together, officials say, these programs reflect a broader commitment by Montgomery Township to foster inclusion, strengthen community relationships, and ensure that all residents are treated with understanding and care in interactions with first responders.

Montgomery Police would also like to thank James Danner and Red Barn Printing for assisting with the production of the decals.
