Montgomery Girls Stay Undefeated; Boys Lacrosse, Baseball Fall in Busy Week for Cougars

MONTGOMERY, NJ — The Montgomery High School athletic teams experienced a mixed slate of results this week, highlighted by an undefeated girls lacrosse squad, while the boys lacrosse and baseball teams each suffered early-season setbacks.

Girls Lacrosse Holds Off Voorhees to Improve to 3-0

The Montgomery girls lacrosse team continued its strong start, defeating Voorhees 11-9 to remain unbeaten at 3-0.

Montgomery set the tone early, building a 7-3 halftime lead behind a balanced offensive attack. The Cougars maintained control through the third quarter, extending the lead to 10-6 before holding off a late push from Voorhees.

Elliana Pizzulli led the way with four goals, adding six draw controls and two free-position conversions in a dominant all-around performance. Sophia Soron contributed three goals, while Lexi Lopez added two goals and an assist.

Kennedy Dexter also played a key role with one goal and two assists, helping facilitate Montgomery’s offensive flow, while the team finished with 17 total points on 11 goals and six assists.

In goal, Elizabeth Andes recorded 10 saves, helping secure the victory as Voorhees attempted a fourth-quarter comeback.

Montgomery also controlled possession effectively, winning 12 draw controls and generating 23 shots on goal, maintaining pressure throughout the game.

Boys Lacrosse Falls to Robbinsville

The Montgomery boys lacrosse team dropped to 0-2 on the season with an 8-3 loss to Robbinsville, as a decisive third quarter shifted the game.

Montgomery opened strong, taking a 2-1 lead after the first quarter, but was held scoreless in the second as Robbinsville tied the game at halftime.

The turning point came in the third quarter, where Robbinsville scored four goals to Montgomery’s one, taking control of the game. The visitors added two more goals in the fourth while shutting out the Cougars to close out the win.

Colin Long led Montgomery with two goals, while Zach Mutton added a goal and an assist. Will Schwartz contributed an assist as well.

Despite solid individual efforts, Montgomery struggled to maintain possession against Robbinsville, which held advantages in both ground balls (24-25 unofficially even but more impactful possessions) and faceoffs. Robbinsville’s Max Guzicki won 9 of 14 faceoffs (64%), helping the Ravens control tempo.

Goalkeeper Xander Mancilla made six saves for Montgomery, facing an efficient Robbinsville offense that converted eight goals on 16 shots on goal.

Baseball Drops Contest to Ridge

On the baseball diamond, Montgomery fell to Ridge 11-1 in a game that was close early before getting out of hand in the later innings.

Montgomery struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Ridge responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first and never relinquished control.

The game remained within reach through four innings, with Ridge holding a 4-1 lead, but a seven-run fifth inning broke the game open.

Montgomery managed just three hits on the day, including a double by Alex Bender and singles from Liam McDonnell and Patrick Fogarty. McDonnell accounted for the team’s lone RBI.

Defensively, Montgomery committed four errors, which contributed to extended innings and additional scoring opportunities for Ridge.

On the mound, Jake Hayes took the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) over 4 1/3 innings, while Kenta Komatsu allowed three runs in relief.

Ridge’s offense was paced by a balanced attack, collecting 11 hits, while pitcher Matt Brievogel limited Montgomery to one run over five innings to earn the win.
