Fire District #2 Election Saturday in Montgomery: What It Is — and Why the Budget Vote Matters
Nicholas Mistretta
Montgomery Township voters will head to the polls this Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, for the annual Fire District #2 election, a local vote that directly affects how the community funds and supports its fire protection services.
While many residents are familiar with seeing firefighters at community events—or hearing sirens on the way to an emergency—fewer understand that a significant part of the system is funded through the fire district process, including an annual public vote on the district’s budget.
What is Fire District #2?
Fire District #2 is the public entity responsible for budgeting and financial oversight for fire protection services in its district. The district is overseen by elected fire commissioners and operates with transparency requirements similar to other local public bodies.
Like other boards and committees in town, Fire District #2 holds monthly public meetings, and residents can attend and speak during public comment.
What’s on the ballot Saturday?
Fire district elections typically include:
- A public vote on the district’s budget, and
- The election of fire district leadership (commissioners), depending on which seats are up for election.
For many voters, the budget question is the headline item because it determines what resources the district will have to operate and plan responsibly.
Why the budget vote is important
Montgomery is unusual—and fortunate—in that it remains 100% volunteer. That model is often more economical than operating a fully career (paid) department, but it still depends on stable funding for the essentials that make volunteer service possible and safe.
The district budget supports the infrastructure behind volunteer response, including things like:
- Equipment and apparatus readiness
- Training and protective gear needs
- Facility upkeep and operational costs
- Planning for replacements and long-term readiness
Supporters of the district’s budget emphasize that a “yes” vote is a direct way the community helps ensure local volunteers can keep answering calls with the tools and support they need.
Budget transparency and public process
Fire District #2 has followed the required public process for its proposed budget, including:
- Posting the proposed budget on its website on Dec. 19
- State review and publication/filing steps required by law, including notice through official channels
Residents who want to better understand the budget are encouraged to review the posted documents and attend district meetings.
