Montgomery Veterans Visit Lower Middle School, Inspire Students with Service Stories

Nicholas Mistretta

Montgomery — Students at Montgomery Lower Middle School received a living history lesson on Friday, Sept. 26, as members of the Montgomery Veterans Memorial Committee shared their personal experiences of military service.

The program, organized by Veterans Committee Chair Dimitra Bairaktaras, a U.S. Army veteran herself, featured fellow veterans Marco Laguna (U.S. Army, 2007–2022), Tim Fallon (U.S. Marines, 2009–2013), and Michael Schraufnagle (U.S. Army, 1970–1973). Together, they spoke candidly with students about their time in uniform, offering insight into the sacrifices, challenges, and rewards of serving the nation.

Hosted by Principal Lisa Romano and Vice Principal Scott Pachuta, the event aimed to help students gain a deeper understanding of what military service means—not only to those who serve but also to the communities they protect.

As part of the program, students were given a special “mission”: to write letters of gratitude to veterans. All letters are due by Oct. 27 and will be reviewed by the Veterans Committee. Several will be selected to be read aloud during Montgomery’s annual Veterans Day Processional and Parade on Nov. 9.

Bairaktaras emphasized the importance of connecting generations through such efforts. “When students hear directly from veterans, they begin to appreciate the human side of service and sacrifice,” she said. “These letters are a way for young people to honor and thank those who have served.”

The event continues a strong tradition of community partnership between the Montgomery schools and the Veterans Committee, fostering respect, reflection, and civic pride among students while ensuring that the stories of veterans remain alive for years to come.
