Montgomery, NJ — A soggy weekend didn’t stop lacrosse action at Cougar Stadium, where both the boys’ and girls’ Montgomery Cougars squads battled through rainy conditions in back-to-back home games. While Friday’s matchup saw the boys fall in a tough loss, Saturday brought redemption with a commanding win by the girls’ team.

Boys Fall to Voorhees Under Friday Night Rain

In a steady downpour Friday evening, the Montgomery boys’ lacrosse team was overpowered by Voorhees High School, falling 14-2 in a tough home contest. Despite the difficult conditions, Voorhees’ Josh Huffod delivered a memorable performance, scoring his 100th career goal — the highlight of the night — and helping his team improve to a 4-2 record on the season.

Montgomery struggled to gain momentum on both sides of the field and now sits at 1-5 as the team looks to regroup heading into the second half of the season.

Girls Dominate Saturday in Soaked Showdown

The Cougar girls took to the same rain-slick turf on Saturday and flipped the script in dramatic fashion, cruising past A.L. Johnson High School of Clark, NJ, with a decisive 15-3 win. The victory bumped Montgomery’s record to an impressive 6-1.

Setting the tone early, the Cougars struck for five goals in each of the first two quarters, effectively putting the game out of reach before halftime. Their aggressive pressure on defense stifled the Crusaders, who managed just seven shots on goal. Senior goalie Victoria Formica turned away four of those attempts, anchoring a stout defensive effort.

On the offensive end, junior standout Ellie Pizzulli led the charge with a monster stat line: 4 goals, 3 assists, 3 ground balls, 3 draw controls, and a forced turnover. She was supported by a balanced scoring attack that included:

  • Marina Barasch: 2 goals, 1 assist, 1 ground ball
  • Blake Zelesnick, Emma Scrudato, Lexi Sambol, Lexi Lopez, Mollie Little, Maddie Gomez, Kennedy Dexter, and Mia Dexter: 1 goal each

The Cougars’ cohesion and depth were on full display, with 10 different players finding the back of the net.
