Montgomery, N.J. — In a playoff environment that felt more like a championship night than a sectional second round, Montgomery High School delivered a poised and powerful 70–60 victory over Trenton on its home court.
With the stands packed, the student section loud from tip-off to final horn, and alumni returning to witness the run, Montgomery improved to 23–4 and advanced deeper into the NJSIAA sectional bracket.
The Cougars’ performance matched the energy in the gym — disciplined, confident, and composed under pressure.

A Battle Early
Trenton (21–8) came out aggressive, opening with a 20-point first quarter behind the scoring of Juan Sanchez and Aivaye Ingram, who each finished with 19 points. Montgomery answered immediately, edging the Tornadoes 21–20 in the opening frame.
The second quarter unfolded with both teams trading baskets and intensity with Montgomery taking a 37–36 lead into the locker room at halftime, setting the stage for a decisive second half.
Defensive Adjustment, Offensive Execution
Montgomery seized control in the third quarter, outscoring Trenton 14–7 in what proved to be the pivotal stretch. Defensive adjustments limited clean looks, and the Cougars began dictating tempo.

Xavier Harrigan delivered a relentless defensive performance, with suffocating coverage turning every possession into a grind. Harrigan was a constant disruption to the Trenton offense.
Senior guard Ethan Lin once again demonstrated why this team is so difficult to defend. Lin poured in a game-high 31 points, attacking the lane, finishing through contact, and converting 14 free throws with clinical precision. His ability to control pace and close possessions proved instrumental down the stretch.
Mike Simborski added 15 points, providing interior presence and timely scoring, while James Kamara contributed 13 points in a balanced offensive effort that showcased Montgomery’s depth.
Trenton attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, scoring 17 points, but Montgomery matched the push with 19 of its own. The Cougars sunk 25 points from the free-throw line as a team, displaying composure that reflects a well-coached and seasoned group.
A Community Behind Them
Beyond the stat sheet, the atmosphere defined the night.
The student section stood for nearly the entire game. Alumni filled the bleachers. Families and faculty created a playoff environment rarely seen outside championship contests. Every defensive stop was met with eruption; every made free throw carried weight.
This Montgomery squad — talented across positions and disciplined in execution — continues to embody both skill and preparation. The coaching staff’s adjustments at halftime and the team’s composure in key moments underscored a program operating with confidence and clarity.
As the final horn sounded, the message was clear: this is a team capable of sustaining its postseason momentum.
Montgomery now moves forward in sectional play on Tuesday, 5:00 pm at Marlboro High School.
