March 21, Montgomery High School — The curtain rose last night on the opening night performance of Newsies at the Montgomery Performing Arts Center (MPAC), and the packed house roared with excitement from start to finish. Based on the beloved 1992 Disney film by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, the musical dazzled with its explosive choreography, powerful vocals, and a cast that proved they’re anything but tired after endless rehearsals hours.
Leading the charge was Colson Orvose as Jack Kelly, delivering a performance brimming with charisma, grit, and just the right touch of swagger. Orvose’s commanding stage presence and heartfelt delivery of songs like “Santa Fe” drew thunderous applause, solidifying his role as the heart of the show.
Opposite him, Sylvia Toedtman shone brightly as Katherine, the sharp-witted reporter who’s as brave as the Newsies themselves. Toedtman’s performance of “Watch What Happens” was a standout, capturing both vulnerability and fierce determination with vocal prowess and emotional depth.
The entire cast brought an infectious energy to the stage, particularly in the jaw-dropping dance numbers. With gravity-defying flips, tightly synchronized footwork, and a contagious enthusiasm, the ensemble showcased the kind of talent and commitment that keeps audiences cheering for more.
From the first note to the final bow, Newsies at MPAC was a triumph — a reminder of the power of story, unity, and standing up for what’s right. And judging by the standing ovation that echoed through the theatre, this show was anything but routine — it was unforgettable.
