Montgomery Veterans Day Ceremony Expands into a Full Community Celebration

Nicholas Mistretta

The Montgomery Veterans Memorial Committee has announced a significant change to its annual Veterans Day Ceremony, traditionally held on November 11, regardless of the day of the week. Beginning this year, the event will be held on the Sunday closest to Veterans Day, a move aimed at increasing community-wide participation—especially among youth and families.

While the committee’s core mission remains to honor and serve Montgomery’s veterans, it has steadily broadened its focus to include civic engagement and education, particularly among students. Over the years, the Veterans Day Ceremony has grown in scale and visibility, now featuring a procession, static displays of historic military vehicles, combat equipment, and even World War II reenactors.

“Unlike Memorial Day, there are very few community events that truly spotlight Veterans Day,” said Dimitra Bairaktaris, Chairperson of the Montgomery Veterans Memorial Committee. “We’ve worked hard to build something meaningful, not just for our veterans, but for the whole community—and especially for our youth.”

To better accommodate students, educators, and families, the committee has long encouraged the Montgomery Township School District to consider early dismissal or a day off on November 11. But in a thoughtful shift designed to maximize involvement, they’ve decided to move the event to a weekend date going forward.

“We didn’t take this decision lightly,” Bairaktaris added. “We know it will require commitment from both the school district and township resources. But after weighing all factors, we believe a Sunday ceremony will allow more residents to take part and will elevate this into a true community day—with more displays, local sponsors, and opportunities for engagement.”

The next Veterans Memorial Committee meeting will be held on September 2 at the Montgomery Municipal Building. The public is encouraged to attend and help shape the future of what promises to be a powerful and unifying community tradition.
