Montgomery Township, NJ — April 3, 2025. In a heartfelt move to support Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month this April, the Montgomery Township Police Department has unveiled a new community initiative aimed at fostering safer, more effective interactions between law enforcement and individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The initiative, known as the Blue Envelope Program, is being launched in partnership with the Rock Brook School, a local private non-profit institution serving communication-impaired and multiply disabled children, and the Montgomery Special Education PTA (SEPTA).

Police Chief Silvio Bet announced the new program earlier this week, highlighting its focus on creating positive, low-stress outcomes during traffic stops involving individuals on the autism spectrum.

“The Blue Envelope is more than an envelope; it’s a symbol of our commitment to inclusivity and understanding,” Chief Bet said. “Through this program, we aim to build upon relationships between law enforcement and the autism community and foster a culture of awareness and compassion that benefits all community members.”

The Blue Envelope itself is a practical tool: it allows individuals with ASD to organize essential documents—such as a driver’s license, registration, and insurance—in a way that is easily accessible and clearly signals to police officers that the driver may require a more understanding and structured interaction. It also contains instructions both for the driver and for the officer, outlining steps to ensure calm, clear communication during a motor vehicle stop.

The program addresses several important community goals: enhancing understandingreducing anxietystreamlining communication, andencouraging preparedness.

The Rock Brook School and Montgomery SEPTA have stepped up as vital community partners, funding a portion of the envelope printing and promoting the initiative among local families and schools.

The Montgomery Township Police Department expressed its gratitude to Rock Brook School and Montgomery SEPTA for their collaboration and ongoing to fostering inclusivity.
