Montgomery Township Announces January Events: From Tree Recycling to Wellness and Community Input

Nicholas Mistretta

MONTGOMERY — As the new year begins, Montgomery Township has lined up a series of events aimed at environmental stewardship, civic engagement, public health, and community well-being. Here is a look at what is on the calendar for January and early February.

Curbside Christmas Tree Collection Begins January 6
The Department of Public Works will begin curbside collection of discarded Christmas trees on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

Residents are urged not to wait to place trees at the curb. Because the collection routes vary and some sections of town may be serviced early in the process, trees put out significantly after January 6 may not be picked up. The collection effort takes several weeks and is heavily dependent on weather conditions, township officials noted, so patience is requested. Residents who prefer to drop trees off themselves—or who miss curbside pickup—can take advantage of drop-off options listed on the Public Works Department page of the township website at montgomerynj.gov.

Township Committee Reorganization Meeting – January 7
Montgomery will hold its annual Reorganization Meeting of the Township Committee on
Wednesday, January 7 at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Center Committee Chambers.

During the meeting:

  • Newly elected or re-elected Township Committee members will be sworn in.
  • The Committee will select the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the coming year.
  • A number of board, commission, and professional appointments will be announced.

The session is open to the public and is traditionally one of the more ceremonial meetings of the year, offering residents a clear look at the leadership structure and priorities that will guide township governance. Light refreshments will be served.

Age-Friendly Listening Sessions: Hearing from Residents 55+
The Age-Friendly Montgomery initiative will host two listening sessions in January, both at the Montgomery Municipal Center, as part of a sustained effort to better understand and serve residents aged 55 and older.

  • Thursday, January 8 – 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, January 27 – 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Organized by the Montgomery Township Health Department, these sessions are designed to assess the needs of older adults in the community and help shape a longer-term action plan.

Topics will include:

  • Housing
  • Transportation
  • Healthcare and access to services
  • Social inclusion and engagement opportunities
  • Communication and information access
  • Other quality-of-life issues for older adults

Each session will feature light refreshments, giveaways, and raffle prizes.

While walk-ins are welcome, RSVPs are appreciated and can be submitted online at:

Free Rabies Vaccination Clinics – January 24 and February 21
The Montgomery Health Department will offer two free rabies vaccination clinics for 2026, both at the:

Otto Kaufman Community Center
356 Skillman Road, Skillman

  • Saturday, January 24 – 9 a.m. to 12 noon
  • Saturday, February 21 – 9 a.m. to 12 noon

No advance registration is required, and the clinics are free of charge.

Pet schedule for both dates:

  • Cats: 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
  • Dogs: 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon

These clinics provide a convenient way for pet owners to keep animals up to date on rabies protection while also supporting broader public health and safety.

“Beat the Winter Blues” Wellness Event – January 31
To help residents cope with cold weather, shorter days, and the seasonal slump that often comes with winter, Montgomery will host “Beat the Winter Blues” on:

Saturday, January 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Municipal Center Committee Chambers

The event will feature information sessions and fun activities focused on:

  • Emotional and mental well-being
  • Healthy habits during the winter months
  • Stress management and self-care strategies
  • Community resources and support

“Beat the Winter Blues” is a joint initiative of the Municipal Alliance and the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, reflecting the township’s commitment to holistic health and community connection, even during the most challenging season of the year.
