Montgomery Police Announce New Statewide E-Bike Regulations

Montgomery Township, N.J. — The Montgomery Township Police Department is advising residents of new statewide regulations governing the use of electric bicycles, following updated requirements issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

The changes, now in effect, are intended to improve public safety, clarify operator requirements, and promote responsible use of e-bikes across New Jersey communities.

Licensing and Age Requirements
Under the new law, individuals operating an e-bike must meet specific licensing criteria. Riders must either possess a valid driver’s license—typically for those age 17 and older—or obtain a motorized bicycle license, which is available to individuals between the ages of 15 and 16.

Children under the age of 14 are prohibited from operating e-bikes under the updated regulations.

Registration and Insurance Now Required
In addition to operator requirements, all e-bikes must now be registered with the state. Riders are also required to carry liability insurance in accordance with state guidelines.

Grace Period for Compliance
To allow time for residents to meet the new requirements, officials have established a six-month grace period running through July 19, 2026. During this time, law enforcement will prioritize education and outreach efforts over penalties.

After the grace period ends, individuals who fail to comply with the new regulations may face enforcement actions, including summonses and fines.

Emphasis on Safety
“These updated regulations are intended to enhance safety for riders, pedestrians, and motorists alike,” said Chief Silvio Bet. “We encourage all residents to review the new requirements and take the necessary steps to comply during the grace period.”

Police officials also reminded riders to wear helmets, follow all traffic laws, and operate e-bikes responsibly.
