Montgomery Girls on Fire: Tennis Cruises 5–0, Field Hockey Powers Past Hunterdon 3–1

Cougar Field Hockey Downs Hunterdon Central, 3–1
The Montgomery High School field hockey team continued its strong midseason push on Monday, defeating Hunterdon Central 3–1 to improve to 6–4 on the year.
The Cougars wasted no time establishing control, striking twice in the opening quarter. Ella Garrison opened the scoring with a poised finish before Carson Benedict doubled the lead, giving Montgomery early momentum.
Hunterdon Central pushed back in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 2–1 on a goal by Katelyn Paul. But the Cougars’ defense, anchored by goalie Carrie Anderson’s five saves, held firm against a series of Red Devil penalty corners.
Montgomery sealed the win in the fourth quarter when Sophia Soron found the cage to restore the two-goal cushion. From there, the Cougars closed out the game with steady possession and defensive discipline.
The offensive stats reflected Montgomery’s edge, as the Cougars outshot Hunterdon Central 14–6 while also generating five penalty corners. Red Devil goalie Julianna Kaecker had a busy afternoon, recording 12 saves to keep her side within reach.
With balanced scoring from Garrison, Benedict, and Soron, Montgomery showed its depth and ability to finish in key moments. The victory marked another step forward for the Cougars as they look to climb above .500 and make noise heading into the postseason.
Montgomery Girls Tennis Dominates Franklin in State Tournament Opener
The Montgomery High School girls tennis team made a powerful statement in the opening round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 Tournament on Monday, sweeping Franklin 5–0 to advance.
With the victory, the Cougars improved to 6–1 on the season and showcased the depth and balance that has made them one of the section’s most formidable contenders.
At first singles, Tongxin Xiao battled through a three-set thriller, defeating Yoana Mironova 6–0, 5–7, 10–2 to secure a hard-earned point for Montgomery. Second and third singles, however, proved to be all business, as Nicolette Shackelford powered past Kermen Kaur 6–1, 6–0 and Emily Ma cruised to a 6–1, 6–0 win over Gianna Mattia.
The doubles teams sealed the sweep with commanding performances. At first doubles, Karina Konyukhov and Mihika Doshi overpowered Franklin’s Mariya Ariswali and Nouralhouda Regragui 6–1, 6–1. Meanwhile, at second doubles, Rachel Silverberg and Lanxin Xiao didn’t drop a game, blanking Keshna Patel and Diya Patel 6–0, 6–0.
The win not only keeps Montgomery alive in the state tournament but also highlights the program’s mix of veteran leadership and rising talent. With momentum on their side, the Cougars now turn their attention to the quarterfinals, where they hope to continue their run toward a sectional title.
