MONTGOMERY, NJ — The Montgomery High School boys varsity golf team faced one of its toughest tests of the season, finishing tied for eighth place at a highly competitive 18-hole invitational featuring many of the region’s top programs.
The Cougars posted a team score of 325 on a par-72 course, tying with Seton Hall Prep and finishing in the middle of a 17-team field. Pingry captured the team title with a 301, followed closely by Delbarton (305) and Watchung Hills (308).
The tournament, played in a full 18-hole stroke format, marked a step up in competition for Montgomery, which entered with a strong 7-2 record. The event brought together several of the state’s most established programs, offering a clear benchmark for the Cougars as the season progresses.
Individually, Pingry’s Rayhao Feng earned medalist honors with an impressive round of 69, the only player in the field to break 70. A tightly packed leaderboard followed, with multiple players finishing at even par or just above, underscoring the depth of the competition.
While Montgomery did not place a golfer among the top finishers, the team remained competitive throughout the round. The Cougars’ score of 325 placed them ahead of several programs with strong early-season records, including Bergen Catholic, Hillsborough, and Hunterdon Central.
The invitational format, with its larger field and extended 18-hole play, often rewards consistency across all scoring positions. Montgomery’s placement reflects a solid team effort against a deep and experienced field, even as several programs posted low team totals.
