Vice Principal Mark Accardi was officially appointed as the new principal of Montgomery Upper Middle School (UMS) at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting.

Accardi, who has served as UMS Vice Principal since 2022, brings a strong background in special education and a student-centered leadership style. He holds multiple education degrees from The College of New Jersey and began his career as a special education teacher. Known for his focus on empathy, individuality, and inclusion, Accardi has worked closely with staff to ensure that all students feel a sense of belonging at UMS. Accardi will succeed Interim Principal Matthew Barbosa, who stepped into the role in January 2025 following the departure of former principal Raquel Estremera-Rivera. Barbosa, a retired educator with over a decade of leadership experience in Somerset County, was appointed to guide UMS through the transition period.
