Inclusive Playground Update

Parks and Recreation Director John Groeger provided an update on the township’s 11,500-square-foot inclusive playground—one of the largest of its kind in Somerset County. Located on Community Drive in front of the Municipal Complex, the playground is designed for children ages two and up, with a cushioned turf surface that wheelchairs and other mobility devices can easily navigate. Ramps will lead to play components, including a swing bay with bucket, traditional, and accessible swings, featuring high backs and harnesses to assist children with special needs.
The project was initiated several years ago by retired Recreation Director Karen Zimmerman, whose vision laid the groundwork for what will soon become a standout community resource. Built by Corby Associates with equipment designed by Ben Shaffer Recreation, the playground faced delays due to weather and supply chain issues, but construction is set to resume August 13.

The estimated $1.5 million project is supported by multiple funding sources: a $750,000 Jake’s Law Grant from the New Jersey Green Acres Program, a $350,000 grant from Somerset County Open Space, $66,000 from the state’s Local Recreation Improvement Fund, $50,000 from Citizens Bank, and $300,000 from the township Parks & Recreation Department’s Capital Improvement Fund. Plans also include three additional handicapped-accessible parking spaces.

Community Events
Groeger also announced that the Recreation Department will host a Summer Movie Night on August 21. Residents are encouraged to bring a blanket and enjoy the evening, with an ice cream truck arriving at 7:30 p.m.
