Cougars Volleyball Rolls to Back-to-Back Wins; Boys Soccer Edges Gill St. Bernard’s

MONTGOMERY, NJ — Montgomery High School girls volleyball continued its strong start with consecutive victories over Voorhees and Franklin, improving to 9-1, while the boys soccer team earned a 3-2 win over Gill St. Bernard’s. Girls field hockey battled unbeaten East Brunswick before falling 3-1, and girls soccer dropped a 6-0 decision to Rutgers Prep.
Volleyball Tops Voorhees in Three Sets
Montgomery girls volleyball improved to 8-1 with a 2-1 victory over Voorhees, rebounding after dropping the middle set to secure the match in the third. The Cougars opened with a 25-18 victory before Voorhees answered with a 25-13 win in the second set. Montgomery regrouped and closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in the deciding third set. Sidney Koslow led the Cougar attack with 10 kills, while adding five digs, six service points and a block. Ritisha Mungi directed the offense with 23 assists, seven digs and three aces. Selina Tan anchored the defense with a team-high 17 digs, while Anshika Verma contributed five kills and eight digs. Pooja Venkat added five kills and six digs, while Avery Zhao finished with three kills. Montgomery totaled 27 kills, 49 digs, 24 assists and four aces in the victory.
Cougars Outlast Franklin to Improve to 9-1
Montgomery followed with another three-set victory, defeating Franklin 2-1 to improve to 9-1. The Cougars took the opening set 25-18, but Franklin responded with a 25-21 victory in the second. Montgomery answered in the deciding set, earning a 25-21 win to secure the match. Sidney Koslow turned in another big performance, leading Montgomery with 16 kills while also collecting 12 digs. Pooja Venkat added 10 kills, six digs and two aces, while Anshika Verma contributed seven kills, three assists and an ace. Ritisha Mungi once again handled much of the setting responsibility, finishing with 25 assists and seven digs. Defensively, Selina Tan recorded a match-high 27 digs, while Carly Zissman added 14 digs and two aces. The Cougars finished the match with 38 kills, 72 digs, 31 assists and seven aces, giving Montgomery consecutive victories and nine wins through its first 10 matches.
Field Hockey Falls to Unbeaten East Brunswick
Montgomery field hockey stayed within striking distance of unbeaten East Brunswick before falling 3-1. Neither team scored in the opening quarter, but East Brunswick broke through twice in the second. Logan Hooper scored the first goal before Rachel Gerould added another, with Hooper providing the assist. Montgomery responded in the third quarter when Ella Garrison found the cage, cutting the deficit to 2-1. East Brunswick answered with a goal from Jolie Salamon, assisted by Gerould, to restore the two-goal advantage. Neither side scored in the fourth quarter. Montgomery generated seven shots on goal and five penalty corners, converting one of those opportunities. Goalkeeper Phoebe Rounds made nine saves for the Cougars, who moved to 1-5. East Brunswick improved to 7-0.
Rutgers Prep Pulls Away From Girls Soccer
Montgomery girls soccer fell to Rutgers Prep, 6-0, moving the Cougars to 3-4. Rutgers Prep carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime before breaking the game open with five second-half goals. Montgomery generated four shots on goal but was unable to break through against the Rutgers Prep defense. Ellie Andes made 13 saves in goal for the Cougars, while Nuvika Shah added two saves. Rutgers Prep’s Cienna Dandridge and Jackie Goldovsky each scored twice, while Sandra O’Neill and Eva Castro added one goal apiece. The Argonauts improved to 5-0-1.
Jerdonek Scores Twice as Boys Soccer Holds Off Gill St. Bernard’s
Montgomery boys soccer earned a 3-2 victory over Gill St. Bernard’s, improving to 3-3. The Cougars built a 2-0 halftime lead and then held off a second-half push from Gill St. Bernard’s. Macintyre Jerdonek led Montgomery with two goals, while Dylan Heines added the other Cougar score. Lucas Cerra, Tomas Tanoue and Ryan Spicer each recorded an assist, giving Montgomery assists on all three of its goals. Gill St. Bernard’s answered with two goals in the second half from Nicholas Varga and Henry Rzemieniewski, but Montgomery added a second-half goal of its own to preserve the one-goal advantage. Goalkeeper Nischal Ande played a major role in keeping the Cougars in front, finishing with 10 saves as Gill St. Bernard’s put 12 shots on goal. Montgomery finished with eight shots on goal and emerged with its third victory of the season.
