MONTGOMERY, NJ — A close game at halftime turned into a convincing Montgomery victory Friday night as the Cougars erupted for 21 unanswered points in the third quarter and pulled away from North Hunterdon for a 31-6 win.

The victory lifted Montgomery to 5-3 on the season, while North Hunterdon fell to 0-8. Zach Furey scored twice on the ground, Xavier Harrigan accounted for two more touchdowns and surpassed 100 rushing yards, while Zach Mutton contributed through the air and with his leg as Montgomery took control after intermission.

Furey Gives Montgomery the Early Lead
Montgomery struck first when Furey broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter. Mutton converted the extra point to give the Cougars a 7-0 advantage. North Hunterdon answered in the second quarter when Matthew Esposito connected with Declan Hale on a 4-yard touchdown pass. The ensuing kick was blocked, allowing Montgomery to carry a slim 7-6 lead into halftime. The one-point margin did not last long.

Cougars Explode for 21 in the Third
Montgomery took command immediately after the break. Furey scored his second touchdown of the night on a 6-yard run, and Mutton’s extra point extended the lead to 14-6. Then Harrigan took over. The senior broke loose for a 17-yard rushing touchdown before later hauling in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mutton, giving Montgomery three third-quarter scores and a commanding 28-6 advantage. By the end of the period, a game that had been separated by a single point at halftime had become a three-touchdown Montgomery lead.

Harrigan Tops 100 Yards
Harrigan continued his string of explosive performances, carrying six times for a team-high 105 rushing yards and a touchdown. He also caught four passes for 19 yards and another score, accounting for two of Montgomery’s four touchdowns. His impact extended to special teams as well, where he recorded a 40-yard kickoff return and totaled 52 yards on two punt returns. Furey added 41 rushing yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, while Samuel Sokoloff carried 10 times for 23 yards. As a team, Montgomery rushed for 189 yards on 28 attempts.

Mutton Contributes in All Three Phases
Mutton completed 5 of 10 passes for 32 yards and a touchdown without an interception, with four of those completions going to Harrigan. Miles Dawson added a 13-yard reception. Mutton also handled the kicking duties, converting all four extra-point attempts before adding a 20-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring at 31-6. That gave Mutton seven kicking points in addition to his touchdown pass.

Defense Keeps North Hunterdon Out of End Zone After Halftime
Montgomery’s defense allowed just one touchdown and shut out North Hunterdon throughout the second half. Devin Roberts led the Cougars with 10 tackles, while also being credited with 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Furey added nine tackles, and Zohaib Tirmizi finished with eight tackles and 2.5 sacks. Mason Miller recorded six tackles and intercepted North Hunterdon quarterback Chase Rochelle, while Jack Schmelzer and Mohit Karnati also contributed sacks. The Cougars were credited with eight sacks overall, repeatedly disrupting the North Hunterdon offense. North Hunterdon produced 172 rushing yards and 75 through the air, but Montgomery prevented those yards from translating into points after the second quarter.

Cougars Continue Climb
The victory was Montgomery’s second straight following its 26-21 road win over Hunterdon Central and moved the Cougars two games above .500 at 5-3. Friday’s performance showed several dimensions of the Montgomery offense. Furey provided the early scoring. Harrigan delivered the explosive plays. Mutton efficiently managed the passing game and supplied seven points with his leg. And when Montgomery needed to turn a one-point halftime advantage into something more comfortable, the Cougars did it quickly.
