Cougars dominate with relentless attack, earn first win of the season
MONTGOMERY September 6, 2025 — The Montgomery High School field hockey team bounced back in emphatic fashion Thursday, overwhelming Lawrence 10–0 to earn its first win of the season. The Cougars (1–1) showcased depth and balance, with seven different players finding the back of the cage in a commanding offensive performance.
From the opening whistle, Montgomery controlled possession and peppered the Cardinals’ defense. The Cougars struck twice in the first quarter — Sophia Soron finishing from a feed by Maddie Gomez, followed by Carson Benedict converting off an assist from Elli Pizzuli — to set the tone.
The second quarter saw Montgomery break the game wide open. Elli Pizzuli, Marina Barasch, and Maddie Gomez each tallied, with crisp ball movement leading to a 5–0 halftime lead. Gomez was instrumental in the buildup, recording two first-half assists and a goal of her own.
After the break, the Cougars erupted for five more goals in the third quarter. Sophomore Aahana Joshi scored twice in quick succession, Ella Garrison added a pair, and Barasch capped the flurry with her second of the night, assisted by Soron. Montgomery finished the frame with a commanding 10–0 lead that proved final.
Statistically, Montgomery dominated every facet of the game. The Cougars outshot Lawrence 27–2 and earned seven penalty corners, converting one. Lawrence goalkeeper Danielle Nevius was busy throughout, piling up 16 saves to keep the margin from growing even larger. On the other end, Montgomery keeper Carrie Anderson needed just two saves to secure the shutout.
Head coach’s emphasis on spreading the ball showed in the box score, with Montgomery showcasing unselfish play and balanced scoring. The Cougars’ ability to finish from multiple players — highlighted by Barasch, Garrison, Joshi, and others — underscores a dangerous attack as the season develops.
With their first win secured, Montgomery will look to build momentum and continue its confident play on both ends of the field in upcoming matchups.
