Big Day for Cougar Girls: Soccer Rallies, Field Hockey Breaks Through, Volleyball Moves to 6-0

MONTGOMERY, NJ — Montgomery High School’s girls teams turned in a strong slate of performances, with girls soccer rallying past Hunterdon Central, field hockey earning its first victory of the season and girls volleyball remaining unbeaten. The boys soccer team, meanwhile, suffered a 4-1 loss to Hunterdon Central.
Seamon Hat Trick Leads Girls Soccer Comeback
The Montgomery girls soccer team overcame a halftime deficit with three second-half goals to defeat Hunterdon Central 4-3 and improve to 3-2. Hunterdon Central held a 2-1 advantage at halftime, but the Cougars responded with three goals after the break while limiting the Red Devils to one. Emma Seamon powered the Montgomery attack with a hat trick and an assist, accounting for seven points in the victory.Quinn Donahue also had a major role in the offense, finishing with one goal and two assists, while Alex Kasimatis added an assist. In goal, Ellie Andes recorded six saves. The victory gave Montgomery its third win of the season and another strong offensive performance in a closely contested match.
Gomez Scores Twice as Field Hockey Earns First Win
Montgomery field hockey broke into the win column with a 2-1 victory over Hunterdon Central, improving to 1-3. After a scoreless opening quarter, Maddie Gomez put Montgomery in front in the second quarter, scoring off an assist from Carson Benedict. Hunterdon Central’s Addyson Weinlein tied the game in the third quarter, setting up a decisive final period. Gomez delivered again in the fourth, scoring her second goal of the game to give Montgomery the 2-1 lead. The Cougars finished with 16 shots on goal and 10 penalty corners, while Hunterdon Central recorded 12 shots and five corners. Goalkeeper Phoebe Rounds helped protect the lead with nine saves. The two-goal performance from Gomez and a strong defensive effort down the stretch secured Montgomery’s first victory of the season.
Volleyball Remains Perfect at 6-0
Montgomery girls volleyball continued its unbeaten start with a commanding 2-0 sweep of College Achieve Central, winning the opening set 25-7 and the second 25-18. The Cougars improved to 6-0 with the victory. Sidney Koslow led the attack with eight kills, while also recording six digs, seven service points and three aces. Leah Fenmore and Anshika Verma each added five kills. Verma also contributed three aces and a block. Ritisha Mungi directed the offense with 12 assists and was a major factor from the service line, recording six aces and nine service points. Avery Zhao and Anita Balashova each finished with four kills, while Selina Tan led the defensive effort with eight digs. Montgomery totaled 31 kills, 33 digs, 24 assists and 15 aces in another balanced performance. Through six matches, the Cougars remain undefeated.
Hunterdon Central Pulls Away From Boys Soccer
The Montgomery boys soccer team fell to 2-2 following a 4-1 loss to Hunterdon Central, which improved to 4-1. The submitted team scoring line lists the match tied 1-1 at halftime before Hunterdon Central scored three times in the second half to pull away. Macintyre Jerdonek was credited with Montgomery’s goal, with Ryan Spicer recording the assist. The detailed scoring-play section of the submitted box score does not list Montgomery’s goal, though the team and individual statistics credit the Cougars with one first-half score. Hunterdon Central received goals from Jonah Failla, Jaxson Hunt, Colby Townsend and Matej Urban. Montgomery goalkeeper Nischal Ande faced consistent pressure and finished with 10 saves as Hunterdon Central recorded 14 shots on goal.
