FLEMINGTON, NJ — Montgomery High School football got contributions in all three phases Friday night, using a three-touchdown performance from Xavier Harrigan, a 126-yard rushing effort from Zach Furey and two defensive interceptions to hold off Hunterdon Central, 26-21.

The road victory lifted the Cougars to 4-3 on the season, while Hunterdon Central fell to 1-6. Harrigan provided Montgomery’s biggest plays of the night, scoring on an 87-yard punt return and catching touchdown passes of 43 and 36 yards from quarterback Zach Mutton.

Cougars Answer Early Hunterdon Central Lead
Hunterdon Central struck first when Connor Simpson scored on a 2-yard run, with Jakob Shamanski adding the extra point for a 7-0 advantage. Montgomery responded with a burst that changed the complexion of the game. Harrigan broke loose for an 87-yard punt-return touchdown, and Mutton’s extra point tied the game at 7. Mutton then scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper to put Montgomery ahead. The ensuing conversion attempt failed. The Cougars added another touchdown when Mutton connected with Harrigan on a 43-yard scoring pass, with Mutton converting the extra point to send Montgomery into halftime leading 20-7.

Hunterdon Central Pushes Back
The Red Devils began cutting into the deficit after halftime. Jayden Cozze scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter, and Shamanski’s extra point reduced Montgomery’s lead to 20-14. Montgomery answered in the fourth. Mutton found Harrigan again, this time for a 36-yard touchdown, giving Harrigan his third score of the night and extending the Cougars’ advantage to 26-14. Hunterdon Central refused to go quietly. Quarterback Odin Potynsky connected with Reggie Osae-Aye for a 27-yard touchdown, and the extra point pulled the Red Devils within five at 26-21. Montgomery’s defense held from there to secure the road win.

Harrigan Delivers in Multiple Phases
Harrigan finished with four receptions for 85 yards and two touchdowns, with every completed pass to him producing significant yardage. His impact extended well beyond the receiving game. The 87-yard punt return gave Montgomery its first touchdown and provided the Cougars with the kind of special-teams play capable of swinging momentum quickly. Harrigan also contributed 19 rushing yards and four tackles on defense.

Mutton Accounts for Three Offensive Touchdowns
Mutton completed 6 of 8 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He also carried 15 times for 55 yards and scored Montgomery’s rushing touchdown. All six Montgomery completions went to either Harrigan or Furey. Furey caught two passes for 26 yards in addition to leading the rushing attack. Montgomery finished with 313 yards of total offense, including 202 on the ground.

Furey Breaks 100-Yard Mark
Furey gave the Cougars another productive night out of the backfield, rushing 14 times for 126 yards. His performance included a 72-yard run and accounted for more than half of Montgomery’s rushing production. The Cougars averaged nearly six yards per carry as a team, with Furey, Mutton and Harrigan combining for 200 of Montgomery’s 202 rushing yards.

Defense Produces Two Turnovers
Montgomery’s defense faced a Hunterdon Central offense that generated 353 total yards but came away with two important interceptions. Mutton and Jack Finnegan each intercepted Potynsky, who finished 15-for-27 for 186 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Mason Miller led Montgomery with nine tackles and also forced a fumble. Furey recorded eight tackles, while Damien Perone finished with six and Zohaib Tirmizi added five. Cozze led Hunterdon Central’s ground game with 111 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, while Aaron Erb was the Red Devils’ top receiver with seven catches for 102 yards.

Cougars Move Above .500
Friday’s victory gave Montgomery an important bounce-back result after its one-point double-overtime loss to unbeaten Cranford the previous week. This time, another close game went Montgomery’s way. The Cougars built a 13-point halftime advantage, responded when Hunterdon Central threatened in the second half and received major contributions from their offense, defense and special teams. At the center of it all was Harrigan, whose three touchdowns came in three different high-impact moments — an 87-yard punt return and a pair of long scoring receptions.
