Mutton Scores Four as Cougars Rally Past Somerville in 38-35 Home Thriller

MONTGOMERY, NJ — Montgomery High School football overcame an early two-touchdown deficit, surrendered and reclaimed the lead twice in the second half, and ultimately came away with a dramatic 38-35 home victory over Somerville.
The Cougars improved to 3-2 behind a four-touchdown performance from Zach Mutton, who carried 18 times for 98 yards and accounted for Montgomery’s go-ahead score and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.
Somerville, also 3-2 following the loss, wasted little time jumping in front. Justin Bowen broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, though Montgomery blocked the extra point. James Hampton followed with a 9-yard scoring run, and Connor Kossowicz’s kick gave the Pioneers a 13-0 advantage.
Montgomery responded in the second quarter. Mutton powered into the end zone from 6 yards out and then ran in the two-point conversion, trimming the deficit to 13-8.
The Cougars struck again before halftime when Zach Furey scored on a 3-yard run. Miles Dawson then connected with Jack Finnegan for the two-point conversion, completing a 16-point quarter and sending Montgomery into halftime with a 16-13 lead.
Somerville Answers in the Third
The momentum swung back toward Somerville after the break. Hampton scored on a 2-yard run and Bowen added the two-point conversion to put the Pioneers back in front, 21-16. Hampton struck again from 7 yards out and ran in the conversion himself, stretching Somerville’s lead to 29-16. Facing another 13-point deficit, Montgomery refused to let the game get away. Mutton scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run and followed with the extra point, pulling the Cougars within 29-23 entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter Turns Into a Shootout
Montgomery carried that momentum into the final period. Mutton scored from 4 yards out and added the kick, giving the Cougars a 30-29 lead. Somerville responded once again. Hampton broke loose for a 26-yard touchdown run to put the Pioneers back on top, 35-30. The ensuing two-point pass failed, leaving Montgomery within five points.
That proved significant.
The Cougars mounted another scoring drive, and Mutton finished it with a 5-yard touchdown run, his fourth of the night. He then carried the ball across the goal line for the two-point conversion, putting Montgomery ahead 38-35.
This time, the lead held.
Montgomery completed a comeback that saw the Cougars trail 13-0 in the first half and 29-16 in the second before scoring 22 of the game’s final 28 points.
Ground Game Powers Cougar Offense
Mutton was at the center of the Montgomery attack, but the Cougars received production throughout the backfield.
Montgomery rushed for 188 yards on 35 carries. In addition to Mutton’s 98 yards and four touchdowns, Furey ran nine times for 45 yards and a touchdown, while Xavier Harrigan gained 40 yards on seven attempts.
The Cougars also generated 137 receiving yards. Mason Miller had two receptions for a team-high 79 yards, including a 69-yard catch, while Furey caught two passes for 55 yards. Finnegan added a 3-yard reception.
Somerville produced plenty of offense of its own, particularly on the ground. Hampton rushed for 174 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries, while Bowen added 147 yards and a touchdown on 17 attempts. The Pioneers totaled 329 rushing yards.
Defense Makes Enough Plays to Finish It
With both offenses moving the football, Montgomery’s defense was tested throughout the night.
Zach Furey led the Cougars with 14 total tackles, while Vincent Cefarello recorded six and Dawson and Harrigan each finished with five. Mason Miller recorded Montgomery’s lone interception, helping the Cougars produce one of the game’s few turnovers.
In a game defined by lead changes, rushing touchdowns and two-point conversions, Montgomery ultimately made the final offensive push count.
