New Rules Affect Takeout Utensils and Electric Bicycles

During the legal update at the July 16 Township committee meeting, Township Attorney Wendy Rubinstein Quiroga reminded residents and businesses that New Jersey’s “Skip the Stuff” law will begin being enforced Aug. 1.

Under the law, restaurants and other food-service businesses may no longer automatically include plastic utensils, napkins or condiment packets with takeout and delivery orders. Customers may still receive those items but will generally need to request them.

The measure is intended to reduce unnecessary single-use waste.

Rubinstein-Quiroga also reminded residents that new state regulations governing electric bicycles are now in effect. She said the requirements include licensing provisions and encouraged e-bike owners, particularly younger riders and their parents, to review the rules and make sure they are in compliance.

Police departments have sought to raise awareness about the regulations following a number of serious accidents involving electric bicycles and motor vehicles.
