Softball Rolls Past Trenton and Boys Lacrosse Edges Crestwood

MONTGOMERY, NJ — Montgomery High School picked up a pair of strong spring sports victories yesterday, as the softball team powered past Trenton in a five-inning mercy-rule win and the boys lacrosse team earned a one-goal victory over Crestwood.

Softball: Montgomery 11, Trenton 1

The Montgomery softball team continued its strong start to the season with an 11-1 home win over Trenton in five innings.

Montgomery (2-1) broke the game open early, scoring two runs in the first inning before erupting for seven more in the second to take firm control. The Cougars added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to complete the mercy-rule victory.

The offense was productive throughout the lineup, finishing with 12 hitsNicolette Shackelford went 2-for-2 and scored a run, while Isabella Malek had two hits and drove in two runs. Alex Winer also drove in two runs and finished with two hits, including a triple.

Allison McKnight added two hits and scored twice, Grace Gandolfo knocked in two runs, and Charlotte Spina contributed an RBI as Montgomery kept steady pressure on Trenton’s defense.

In the circle, Ryane Riddell earned the win with a dominant performance. Riddell worked all five innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out 11 and walking three.

Trenton’s lone run came in the fifth inning, but Montgomery’s early offensive surge had already put the game out of reach.

Boys Lacrosse: Montgomery 8, Crestwood 7

The Montgomery boys lacrosse team also came away with a much-needed win, defeating Crestwood (Pa.) 8-7 in a tight contest.

The Cougars were led by Zach Mutton, who scored four goals, while Will Schwartz added three goalsColin Long contributed a goal and three assists, and Patrick Petrozzini had a strong playmaking game with three assists.

Montgomery’s offense finished with eight goals and six assists, getting production from both its scorers and distributors in a balanced attack.

In goal, Xander Mancilla made seven saves, helping the Cougars hold off Crestwood in the close finish.
