Opinion: A Championship Program and a Community Tradition

Nicholas Mistretta

MHS ’79 Cougar Sports Correspondent

For those of us at Sourland Media, the success of the Montgomery Cougars boys basketball program is more than a headline — it is personal.

Our organization is family owned and deeply rooted in this community. The founders, owners, and publishers of Sourland Media are all proud alumni of Montgomery High School, graduating in 1979, 1983, 2018, and 2022. Cougar sports have always been part of our lives and our identity.

Like many longtime sports fans, we grew up reading the newspaper from the back page forward, where the scores, box scores, and game stories lived. Those pages told the story of a community through its athletes — the triumphs, the rivalries, the moments that generations remember.

This season has delivered one of those moments.

We recently witnessed Montgomery history when senior guard Ethan Lin surpassed the long-standing Montgomery scoring record previously held by Maurice Bahr. For those of us fortunate enough to watch Bahr play during his era, that record carried real weight. It symbolized excellence, dedication, and a standard that defined Cougar basketball for years.

Seeing Lin reach and pass that milestone was not just impressive — it was historic.

But numbers alone never tell the full story of a team.

What makes this group special goes well beyond points on a scoreboard. Several members of this team are students we know personally, young men who represent the best qualities of Montgomery. They are disciplined athletes, but they are also serious students, respectful leaders, and teammates who understand that representing their school carries responsibility.

That balance matters.

Great programs are not built solely on talent. They are built on culture, mentorship, and guidance — and that begins with coaching. The Montgomery coaching staff deserves tremendous credit for the time, energy, and commitment they invest in developing these players not only as athletes, but as young men preparing for life beyond the court.

At Sourland Media, we believe local sports coverage plays an important role in strengthening a community. As part of our strategic plan for the coming year, Headline News Montgomery will continue expanding its coverage and support of Cougar athletics and student achievement.

Programs like Montgomery basketball remind us why.

They bring alumni back to the stands. They energize student sections. They give a town something to rally around. And they create moments — like record-breaking performances and championship runs — that become part of Montgomery’s shared story.

To this year’s team and coaches: congratulations on an extraordinary season. Your work ethic, discipline, and pride in wearing Montgomery across your chest have not gone unnoticed.

From one generation of Cougars to another, we could not be more proud.

The Cougars will continue their postseason journey on Tuesday night, March 10, when they travel to face Cherry Hill East at Deptford High School in the NJSIAA Group IV semifinal, with tip-off scheduled for 5:00 p.m. As the team prepares for the next chapter of this remarkable run, the entire Montgomery community will be behind them.

Good luck, Cougars. Bring it home.
