Mandatory Travel Restriction Extended as Winter Storm Continues to Impact Montgomery Township

Nicholas Mistretta

Montgomery Township remains under a state-imposed travel restriction as hazardous winter storm conditions persist across New Jersey.

The Montgomery Township Police Department announced Monday morning that the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, operating under the Division of the New Jersey State Police, has extended the mandatory travel restriction originally implemented Sunday evening.

The restriction, which began at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, will now remain in effect until 12:00 noon on Monday, Feb. 23.

Hazardous Conditions Persist
State officials cited continued heavy snowfall, blizzard-like conditions and strong winds as the basis for extending the restriction. Roadways throughout the state remain snow-covered and in some areas impassable, with drifting snow and reduced visibility contributing to dangerous travel conditions.

Local officials continue to urge residents to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. Snow removal operations are ongoing throughout Montgomery Township, with plow crews working to clear primary routes and residential streets as conditions allow.

Who Is Exempt
The mandatory travel restriction does not apply to the following categories:

  • Emergency and public safety vehicles and personnel
  • Public works and snow removal crews
  • Public transportation vehicles and personnel
  • Government officials conducting official business
  • Utility company vehicles and personnel
  • Healthcare workers and urgent medical travel
  • Personnel supporting emergency shelter operations and human services facilities
  • Delivery of critical medical supplies and services to healthcare facilities
  • News media
  • Private snow removal contractors

Officials emphasize that these exemptions are intended to ensure that essential services, emergency response operations and critical infrastructure support remain uninterrupted during the storm.

Continued Monitoring
State and local authorities will continue monitoring weather conditions and roadway safety throughout the morning. Residents are encouraged to follow official updates from township police and state emergency management channels.

Motorists are reminded that even after restrictions are lifted, road conditions may remain hazardous due to snow accumulation, drifting and potential refreezing.

Additional updates will be provided as conditions evolve.
