Girls Basketball: Defense and Balance Fuel Two Wins

The Montgomery girls improved their momentum with back-to-back victories over Hightstown and Belvidere.

Montgomery 39, Hightstown 30 (Feb. 19)

Montgomery (14-12) pulled away in the second half to secure a 39-30 win over Hightstown. After leading just 13-8 at halftime, the Cougars used a 13-point third quarter to create separation.

Montgomery forced 14 steals and outrebounded Hightstown 32-28. Hayley Dekok paced the Rams with 22 points, including three 3-pointers and a 7-for-9 effort from the free-throw line.

Montgomery 48, Belvidere 43 (Feb. 21)

Two nights later, the Cougars earned a quality road win, holding off Belvidere 48-43.

Montgomery built a nine-point advantage entering the fourth quarter before weathering a late push. Anya Saini delivered a standout performance with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, while Johnson added 13 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games.

The Cougars knocked down seven 3-pointers and went 9-for-13 at the free-throw line to offset Belvidere’s 42-35 rebounding edge. Natalie Sroka led Belvidere with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Boys Basketball: Statement Win Over Morris Knolls

Montgomery’s boys basketball team (21-4) continued its strong season with a decisive 66-30 victory over Morris Knolls on Feb. 18.

The Cougars jumped out to a 34-19 halftime lead and overwhelmed the visitors with a 22-point fourth quarter.

Ethan Lin poured in 23 points, connecting on five 3-pointers, while Mike Simborski added 15 points. Montgomery drained 11 shots from beyond the arc and went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in a balanced offensive performance.

Brody Hallik scored 20 points for Morris Knolls, accounting for two-thirds of his team’s scoring.
