Cougars Battle Hard but Fall to Hun in Straight Sets
The Montgomery Cougars showed grit and determination but came up short in a 2–0 loss to Hun on Thursday, falling by identical scores of 25–19, 25–19. With the defeat, Montgomery moved to 2–9 on the season, while Hun improved to 3–2.
Montgomery’s defense kept the Cougars within striking distance in both sets. Maya Flores anchored the back row with a team-high 16 digs and added an ace. Lois Oppong chipped in six digs, while Sonia Gupta balanced the floor with five digs and a match-best six assists.
At the net, Meredith Shore powered the attack with three kills and two blocks. She was joined by Polar Zacherau (two kills, two digs) and Anna Braem, who provided two kills and a pair of aces to keep Hun under pressure. Isabella Barber added a kill and a block, while Anshika Verma also recorded a block and a kill.
Despite the balanced effort, Hun’s consistent serving runs and ability to close out rallies in key moments proved to be the difference.

Cougars Roll Past Hillsborough with 4–0 Shutout Victory
The Montgomery boys’ soccer team continued its strong run of form with a commanding 4–0 win over Hillsborough on Thursday, improving to 7-2-1 on the season. The Cougars struck early and never looked back, showcasing balanced scoring and stifling defense to secure the home victory.
Montgomery wasted little time setting the tone, netting three first-half goals to build a commanding lead. Sid Goyal led the charge with a goal and an assist, while Ryan Spicer matched the effort with a goal and assist of his own. Christian Truppi and Chase Mian each added goals to round out the Cougars’ offensive outburst.
Playmaker Luke Oliu was instrumental in the attack, tallying two assists as Montgomery peppered the Hillsborough defense with 14 shots on goal.
On the other end of the field, Montgomery’s defense held strong, limiting Hillsborough’s chances and preserving the clean sheet. Goalkeepers Alex Acot and Cameron Olsen combined for seven saves to frustrate the Raiders’ attack.
Despite 10 saves from Hillsborough goalkeeper Gabriel Luna, the relentless Cougar offense proved too much.
With the win, Montgomery has now outscored opponents 7–1 over its last two matches, continuing to build momentum as the season heads into its midpoint.
Cougars Dominate Watchung Hills Under the Lights, Roll to 36–7 Victory
Montgomery football delivered a statement win Friday night, riding explosive plays and a relentless defense to a 36–7 victory over Watchung Hills in front of a packed home crowd. With the win, the Cougars improved to 4-1, strengthening their position as one of the area’s rising contenders.
Quarterback Jack Kristjanson set the tone early, firing a 34-yard touchdown pass to Trey McFadden in the first quarter. The signal caller went on to throw for 271 yards and two touchdowns, including an electrifying 84-yard strike to Obinna Obuba in the second quarter that brought fans to their feet.
McFadden added a 14-yard rushing score before halftime, giving Montgomery a 20–7 lead. A defensive safety in the closing minutes of the second quarter extended the advantage to 22–7 at the break.
While the offense provided highlight-reel moments, the Cougar defense stole the show in the second half. Linebacker Zach Mutton turned momentum firmly in Montgomery’s favor with a 9-yard fumble return touchdown in the fourth quarter, then capped the night with a second scoop-and-score from 12 yards out.
Running back Caiden Miller contributed two short-yardage touchdowns in the final frame, sealing the rout.
Kristjanson finished 11-for-25 through the air, connecting with Obuba (141 yards, 1 TD) and McFadden (73 yards, 1 TD) as his top targets. Miller paced the rushing attack with 50 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Defensively, Montgomery was opportunistic, forcing three turnovers and pressuring Warriors quarterback Liam Morris into two interceptions. Despite racking up 129 yards in penalties, the Cougars’ athleticism and big-play ability proved overwhelming.
The victory marks Montgomery’s third straight win under the lights and showcases the program’s balance on both sides of the ball.
