Montgomery Boys Soccer Erupts in Second Half to Defeat Hillsborough, 6–1

The Montgomery Cougars boys’ varsity soccer team turned a scoreless first half into a statement win on Wednesday, erupting for six second-half goals to defeat previously unbeaten Hillsborough, 6–1, on their home turf.

For 40 minutes, the two teams battled evenly, with both defenses holding firm. But after Hillsborough’s Shameek Parab broke through in the 54th minute to give the Raiders a 1–0 lead, the Cougars responded with a relentless offensive surge that left no doubt.

Mac Jerdonek led the charge, recording a hat trick and adding an assist for a game-high seven points. Dylan Heines chipped in with a goal and an assist, while Lachlan Daly and Luke Oliu each found the back of the net to round out the scoring. Assists also came from Sid Goyal and Jason Lee, as Montgomery’s attack showcased its depth and balance.

Goalkeeper Alex Acot anchored the defense with three saves, ensuring Hillsborough’s early tally was the only damage allowed. On the other side, Raiders goalkeepers Sathvik Koltur and Gabriel Luna faced constant pressure, combining for 10 saves as Montgomery peppered the net with 12 shots on goal.

The victory pushes Montgomery to 3–1 on the season and highlights the team’s ability to respond under pressure. What began as a tight, defensive contest quickly turned into a statement-making offensive display, with the Cougars reminding the Skyland Conference they can finish as strongly as any team in the region.

Montgomery Battles Hard, Falls in Five-Set Thriller to Gill St. Bernard’s

MONTGOMERY — In a match that had all the drama of a postseason clash, the Montgomery Cougars girls’ varsity volleyball team came up just short in a five-set heartbreaker against Gill St. Bernard’s on Thursday night.

The visiting Knights (5-1) edged Montgomery (2-3) by scores of 25-21, 16-25, 26-24, showing both resilience and late-match poise to secure the victory.

Montgomery bounced back impressively after dropping the opening set, storming through the second with a 25-16 win to even the match. The third set was a nail-biter, with the Cougars pushing Gill to the limit before narrowly falling, 26-24.

Despite the loss, Montgomery’s stat sheet told the story of a team that left everything on the court. Polar Zacherau powered the Cougar offense with 10 kills, while setter Ritisha Mungi orchestrated the attack masterfully with 20 assists and added 8 digs on defense. Maya Flores provided a spark at the service line with a team-high 5 aces and chipped in 10 service points.

Defensively, Pooja Venkat was outstanding, anchoring the back row with 16 digs, while Lois Oppong and Luiza Honorio combined for 12 more. Anna Braem and Anshika Verma also contributed steady offense with 8 combined kills.

Gill St. Bernard’s ultimately found just enough momentum in the closing points to pull away, but the Cougars showed toughness throughout, proving they can hang with some of the area’s best teams.

Montgomery will look to rebound next week as they continue a challenging stretch of their early-season schedule.
