Our Approach to Community Voices and Election Coverage: Every Candidate, Unedited
Headline News Montgomery Staff
At Headline News Montgomery, our mission has always been clear: to provide accurate, fair, and meaningful reporting that informs and strengthens our community. With that in mind, we want to share our position regarding Letters to the Editor and how we approach election coverage.
At this time, we have made a deliberate decision not to include a Letters to the Editor section in our publication. While we respect the longstanding tradition of public commentary in local journalism, our focus remains on reporting that is informative, fact-based, and accessible.
This choice does not mean we shy away from difficult issues. On the contrary, when a matter is important to our readers, we are committed to covering it with honesty, depth, and journalistic integrity. However, we believe that hosting ongoing debates in our pages is not the most productive way to serve the community. Social media and other forums already provide ample space for public back-and-forth.
There are several reasons for this decision. Ground rules for Letters to the Editor vary widely, and enforcing them would require us to fact-check personal submissions, regulate word counts, and arbitrate what qualifies as “appropriate.” In our experience, these sections too often drift toward gossip, conflict, and division rather than fostering real understanding. We would rather invest our time and resources in reporting that brings clarity.
That is why, during election season, we put our energy into thoughtful coverage of the candidates themselves. For the current Montgomery Township Board of Education race, we have reached out to all six candidates, offering each the same opportunity to share their perspectives. Every candidate received a list of identical questions. To ensure transparency and fairness, we did not impose a word limit and will not edit or alter the candidates’ replies in any way. Their words will appear exactly as they provide them.
Equally important, Headline News Montgomery does not endorse candidates, nor do we accept advertising dollars from any campaign. Every candidate—regardless of affiliation—has the same chance to share their thoughts and ideas with the public.
Looking ahead, we will also be extending the same opportunity to all four candidates running for Montgomery Township Committee. Our goal is simple: to give residents direct access to the voices of those seeking to represent them.
Once we have received all responses, we will publish each candidate’s answers in full, giving voters the information they need to make an informed choice—without editorial spin or selective filtering.
In short, our role is not to referee public opinion, but to provide reliable, even-handed reporting. Our readers deserve nothing less.
