Montgomery Police Launch New Defensive Tactics Training, Engage with Local Youth

Montgomery Township – July 16, 2025

In a proactive step toward enhancing officer safety and preparedness, the Montgomery Township Police Department has launched a new defensive tactics training program aligned with state mandates and modern law enforcement standards.

The initiative, which began in June, was developed by two officers within the department who are trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). After completing a series of instructor-level courses, they built a curriculum in compliance with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Use of Force Policy, the New Jersey Law Enforcement Licensing Program, and guidelines from the New Jersey Police Training Commission. The state now requires a minimum of four hours of defensive tactics training per officer each year.

Montgomery PD exceeded that requirement, providing each officer with six hours of hands-on training, utilizing new equipment and the gym at the Otto Kaufman Community Center. Department leadership says additional sessions are planned to continue building on this foundation.

As part of its ongoing community engagement, the department also made a special appearance at Montgomery Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s first-ever summer camp, held the week of July 7. The camp, geared toward children ages 5 to 10, welcomed Officer Gonzalez on July 9. He gave the young participants a tour of his patrol car and spoke about how BJJ is used in law enforcement to safely and effectively handle physical situations.

The visit included a live demonstration of some of the techniques used in police training, offering the children a behind-the-scenes look at the skills officers are developing.

The department expressed its appreciation to Professor Miguel and Montgomery BJJ for the invitation and emphasized its ongoing commitment to positive, educational outreach within the community.
