Montgomery Residents Urged to Attend Critical Meeting on Griggstown Causeway Safety

Nicholas Mistretta

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Somerset County officials will hold a public information session on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, to present findings and hear feedback on the Griggstown Causeway (CR 632) Concept Development Study—a critical infrastructure review that could shape the future of one of the region’s most problematic thoroughfares.

The meeting will take place at the Somerset County Administration Building, 20 Grove Street, Somerville, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., with a formal presentation beginning at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Q&A session. All Montgomery Township residents are strongly encouraged to attend.

The Griggstown Causeway, which connects River Road (CR 533) in Montgomery to Canal Road in Franklin Township, is a well-known traffic choke point and the site of frequent closures and accidents, particularly during flooding events. The Causeway crosses the Millstone River, the D&R Canal, and D&R Canal State Park, and includes a one-lane truss bridge—Bridge No. F0302—that is increasingly seen as outdated and unsafe.

The Concept Development Study, launched by Somerset County, seeks to evaluate current conditions and explore potential improvements to safety, traffic flow, sight lines, and flood resilience. The study area includes several key intersections and stretches of roadway surrounding the Causeway, including:

  • River Road (CR 533) and Griggstown Causeway (CR 632)
  • Canal Road and Griggstown Causeway
  • Canal Road and Bunker Hill Road (CR 632)

At the July 1 meeting, members of the public will have the opportunity to engage directly with county engineers and project consultants, ask questions, and offer input on the Preliminary Preferred Alternative (PPA)—a proposed solution under consideration to address the area’s long-standing transportation challenges.

“This project has implications not just for Franklin and Montgomery Townships, but for the entire region,” said a Somerset County official. “The Causeway is a vital connector for commuters, emergency services, and everyday travel. Public feedback is essential in determining how to move forward.”
