Local Artists Spotlight Climate Change in New Exhibit at Montgomery Municipal Center

Reception and artist talk set for June 12
Montgomery Township’s Municipal Center is once again showcasing the power of local art to spark reflection and community dialogue. This summer, the lobby features a compelling new exhibit titled “Climate Change Now”, created by local artists Spriha Gupta and Susan Hockaday. A reception and artist talk will take place on Wednesday, June 12, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., offering residents an opportunity to meet the artists, explore the exhibit, and engage in conversations about climate change and environmental responsibility. Light refreshments will be served.
Through mixed media, photography, and found objects, Gupta and Hockaday’s work explores the delicate relationship between humanity and nature, with a focus on the growing threat of plastic pollution and mass consumerism. The artists’ goal is to use visual storytelling to raise awareness and encourage even small steps toward environmental sustainability.
Spriha Gupta, a Skillman resident, describes her pieces as deeply rooted in nature, using materials like bark, cloth, and handmade paper to craft textured, layered landscapes. “My work draws deeply from nature, using it as both muse and material,” Gupta explains. “Through these tactile pieces, I invite viewers to reflect on the fragile relationship between humanity and the environment.”
For nearly two decades, Susan Hockaday has used her art to respond to the climate crisis. Her colorful, often provocative photography draws connections between environmental waste and its impact on ecosystems. “I feel art helps people talk about the fears and problems surrounding them in relation to the environment and climate change,” Hockaday said.
Kathy Lynch of the Montgomery Township Environmental Commission emphasized the alignment of the exhibit with ongoing community initiatives. “We are honored that these two artists are sharing their impactful work with our community,” she said. “This builds on the Commission’s efforts to address plastic pollution and its health impacts. We hope the exhibit will inform and inspire.”
Mayor Neena Singh will attend the reception along with other township officials. “Art enriches all of our lives,” said Mayor Singh. “It adds to our cultural landscape, enhances community identity, boosts local businesses, and fosters a sense of place. The Montgomery municipal center lobby was designed as a space for showcasing local talent, and this exhibit is a beautiful continuation of that vision.”
The June 12 reception invites attendees to experience the artwork up close, connect directly with the artists, and engage in thoughtful conversations about sustainability and the role of art in environmental advocacy. The exhibit will remain on display through the end of August during municipal and library public hours.
