Cougars Softball Roars to Victory While Baseball Stumbles on the Road

It was a tale of two fields this week for Montgomery High School athletics as the varsity softball team delivered a commanding win at home, while the baseball squad came up short in a tough road matchup.

Softball Dominates Dunellen in Offensive Showcase
The Cougars softball team lit up the scoreboard in a 17-4 rout of Dunellen on a perfect spring evening at home, improving their season record to6-13. The team exploded for 19 hits, showcasing balanced offensive firepower and consistent production up and down the lineup.

Ryane Riddell led the charge both in the circle and at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs. She also earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing just four runs on six hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Connor Fogarty matched Riddell’s offensive output with a 4-for-4 performance of her own, tallying four runs and an RBI. Maggie McGlynncontinued her strong season, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Nicolette Shackelford added another spark to the Cougar attack, collecting three hitsthree RBIs, and two runsCharlotte Spina and Allison McKnight each had two hits, while Emma McKnight rounded out the offense with a hit of her own.

Baseball Shut Out by St. Thomas Aquinas
On the road, the varsity baseball team dropped to 7-14 with a 5-0 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas (15-7). The Cougars were limited to just four hitsin the game and struggled to generate offense against a sharp Aquinas pitching staff.

Alex Bender accounted for one of the game’s few bright spots with a double, while Michael Englert and Liam McDonnell and Evan Puleioeach added a single. Despite reaching base, the Cougars couldn’t string together enough offense to challenge the hosts.

Liam McDonnell took the loss on the mound, throwing four innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits, walking four and striking out three over 80 pitchesSebastian Kyler pitched the final two frames, surrendering one run on two hits, with two walks and one strikeout.
