PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Montgomery Cougars’ unforgettable basketball season came to a close on Sunday night as they battled the Plainfield Cardinals in the NJSIAA Group 4 state championship at Jersey Mike’s Arena. Despite a determined effort, Montgomery fell short, 65-48, against a talented Plainfield squad.

The Cougars came out strong, keeping pace early and trailing by just six points after the first quarter. Senior leaders Bohdan Biekietov, Christian Hill, and Ethan Lin delivered key moments throughout the game, showcasing the grit and skill that have defined Montgomery’s season. However, Plainfield’s defensive pressure and high-energy offense, led by standout NaJai Hines, proved too much to overcome in the second half.

Though the final score wasn’t in Montgomery’s favor, the loss does not overshadow an extraordinary season. Under the leadership of Coach Kris Grundy and his staff, the Cougars finished with an impressive 25-6 record, capturing their second consecutive Central Jersey Group 4 sectional title and proving themselves as one of the top teams in the state. Coach Grundy’s ability to develop talent and foster team chemistry has been instrumental in Montgomery’s sustained success.

A Community United
Montgomery’s fans have been the heart and soul of this incredible run, packing the stands game after game and creating an electric atmosphere. Their unwavering support for the team has been nothing short of inspiring, recognizing the players not just for their wins but for their relentless effort, teamwork, and commitment to excellence.

Looking Ahead
As the season ends, the Cougars will bid farewell to a remarkable senior class, including Bohdan Biekietov, Christian Hill, and Kyryl Streltsov, who have played crucial roles in the program’s success. With these key players headed off to college, Montgomery will look to its younger talent to carry the torch and build on the strong foundation laid this season.

While Sunday’s game marked the end of this chapter, the Montgomery Cougars’ journey is far from over. With a culture of hard work and a program built for sustained success, the future remains bright for this team. For now, the players, coaches, and fans can reflect on an unforgettable season—one filled with triumphs, memories, and a championship spirit that will not be forgotten.
